Bankia joins Cotec board of trustees

05 March 2018

Category: Corporate

Bankia chairman, José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, and Fundación Cotec president, Cristina Garmendia, at Bankia's headquarters in Madrid.

  • Bankia's entry in Cotec forms part of its new Strategic Plan 2018-2020, which includes actions focused on three major challenges facing today's society: customer 4.0, education and employment, environment and digitisation

The financial institution Bankia, after having unveiled last week its Strategic Plan for 2018-2020, is once again strengthening its commitment to innovation by joining the Board of Trustees of Fundación Cotec as a numbered trustee. By joining the Board, Bankia will be reflecting in Cotec the decisive role played by the banking sector in the national innovation system.

One of Bankia's key objectives is to improve relationships with the new customer 4.0 profile by expanding and enhancing its multichannel services, paying special attention to digital services. This vision is closely aligned with several ongoing Cotec projects. Education and employment, environment and responsible digitisation are other challenges facing today's society that represent points of connection between the Foundation's work and Bankia's strategic interests.

It's important to be part of the institutions that are striving to improve our society via innovation

José Ignacio Goirigolzarri
Chairman of Bankia

In the words of the chairman of Bankia Spain, José Ignacio Goirigolzarri: “We are excited about our joining Cotec because we believe that it is important to be part of the institutions that are striving to improve our society via innovation. It makes complete sense for us to join the Foundation because we share the view that innovation is not just technology, but all advances made in any area, and that the ultimate purpose is to create value for society as a whole”. “We are convinced that our participation is going to be very positive for Bankia and we are also confident that we can bring positive things to Cotec. Certainly, there will be no lack of commitment or effort on our part”, concluded Goirigolzarri.

The president of Cotec, Cristina Garmendia, celebrated Bankia's enrolment in the Foundation with the following words: “Bankia shares the wider view of innovation that Cotec promotes, namely, that innovation is all change, not just technological, based on knowledge, of all kinds, not just scientific, and that creates value, not just economic value”. “We are convinced that Bankia's contributions to our Board of Trustees will enrich the present lines of work carried on by Cotec, which are focused on three major transitions: from analogue to digital, from the linear to the circular and from the tangible to the intangible”, Garmendia added.

The Cotec Board of Trustees, whose honorary president is HRH the King of Spain, is composed of nearly 90 public and private entities involved in innovation. Fundación Cotec's Strategic Plan through 2020 includes new enrolments on its Board of Trustees, to bring in representatives of the national innovation system who have thus far been absent or underrepresented, such as the automotive, textile, tourism, hospitality and food, capital goods, electronic, digital enterprises and publishing industries, as well as the worlds of culture and sports, amongst others.
