Bankia appoints Data Protection and Privacy Officer to reinforce the security of its customers’ data

Bankia has appointed Elena Bernal to be the bank’s Data Protection and Privacy Officer (DPO), a new position intended to strengthen oversight of the processes that ensure the privacy of customers’ personal information.

Bankia has appointed Elena Bernal to be the bank's Data Protection and Privacy Officer (DPO), a new position intended to strengthen oversight of the processes that ensure the privacy of customers' personal information.

This decision is part of the bank's integrated strategy, set out in the 2018-2020 Strategic Plan, of implementing a responsible digitisation process, tailored to the customer.

Under the Strategic Plan, Bankia will invest nearly 1 billion euros over the next three years in digitising the company, ensuring that digital technology is useful to customers and thus also to society.

For Bankia's chairman, José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, "Protecting our customers' personal information and privacy is a priority for the bank and to achieve that we have designed a secure, private digital environment, thanks to training and awareness building among employees, suppliers and other stakeholders of the bank."

"Today, and in an increasingly digital future, it is more important than ever to take special care of customers' personal information. We at Bankia must deliver an optimal response to that demand," said Goirigolzarri.

The bank's chairman pointed out that 64% of consumers regard banks as guarantors of security in privacy and data protection matters, second only to hospitals in this respect. Also, 87% of them recognise that their personal information is valuable, while 73% want to protect their personal data more effectively but do not know how.

Accordingly, the bank is working to apply the very highest standards in its management of customers' rights to their data and data privacy. Specifically, it plans, among other initiatives, to develop a personal data catalogue and to identify data so as to facilitate exercise of the portability right.

Ensuring the protection of personal information

The new Data Protection Officer, Elena Bernal, has a bachelor's degree in Law and Business Administration and also has training in data protection.

With this appointment Bankia meets the requirements of the new European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), aimed at reinforcing transparency and control of customer information. Bankia has added the term "Privacy" to the job title (Data Protection and Privacy Officer) to indicate its strategic willingness to deliver solutions in relation to privacy.

Among Elena Bernal's new functions are those of overseeing compliance with the duty to protect the personal information provided by customers and the implementation and application of Bankia's policy in this respect.

The bank is developing new internal procedures to detect possible threats to privacy, putting Bankia at the forefront of international best practice in the field of data protection.

In coordination with the Cyber Security Area, Bankia is developing control models that will meet customers' increasing concerns over the use of their personal information.

The bank's cyber security experts are conducting Data Privacy Impact Assessments (DPIAs), which serve to identify and correct possible attacks against the security of customers' personal information.
