Bankia, recognised by the Dow Jones European Sustainability Index as one of the most sustainable companies

DJSI Europe is one of the most prestigious indices in terms of sustainability recognized by analysts and of which ten European financial institutions are part, including five Spanish banks.

Bankia remains for the fourth year in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) Europe, which recognises the financial institution as one of the most sustainable companies in Europe.

DJSI Europe is one of the most prestigious sustainability indexes recognised by analysts and of which ten European financial institutions are members, including five Spanish banks, which assesses the performance of companies in economic, environmental and social aspects.

Bankia Dow Jones Sustainability Indices Analysts have assessed Bankia, with the maximum score of 100 points, on aspects such as customer relations, transparency, fiscal strategy, communication on environmental protection, climate and social change, and financial inclusion.

The chairman of Bankia, José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, pointed out that "for Bankia, the inclusion of environmental, social and good governance (ESG) criteria, as well as corporate integrity, are fundamental requirements for maintaining the trust of our customers and shareholders and of society".

Bankia has received a total score of 80 points out of 100, improving the score last year by two points. Among the ratings obtained, analysts have especially assessed customer relations, which obtained the highest score this year. Meanwhile, fiscal strategy, transparency and financial inclusion have maintained the highest score already recorded last year.

There have been two areas that have significantly increased their score. The environmental dimension has improved with respect to 2019 by a total of five points, especially highlighting the improvements implemented in operational efficiency. Likewise, the social dimension has registered a positive assessment by analysts who have rated aspects such as social policy reporting with 100 points.

In line with its commitment to responsible management of the institution, Bankia has been included in the FTSE4Good Index since 2016, an internationally designed index to facilitate investment in companies that manage their businesses with environmental, social and good corporate governance (ESG) criteria and are recognised for their sustainability practices. During 2019, Bankia contributed to mobilising sustainable financial resources worth 9 billion euros.

In June 2019, Bankia joined the Euronext Vigeo Eurozone 120 Index, which recognises commitment to developing best practices in corporate governance, employment, contribution to economic development, human rights and the environment.

In addition, Bankia is part of the S&P Europe 350 ESG, which brings together a series of global indices launched by S&P Dow Jones Indices. This index is made up of companies analysed according to ESG criteria, based on their commercial activity and their performance in compliance with the United Nations Global Compact.

In September 2019, Bankia was one of the founding banks of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Banking and the Collective Commitment to Climate Action, financial sector global alliances for the environment and for which financial institutions publicly assume the duty of aligning their activities with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.

In line with its commitment to the SDGs, during 2020, the financial institution adhered to the Women’s Empowerment Principles, also promoted by the United Nations. Bankia is also part of the Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index, which assesses the equality policies that the institution has implemented and the commitment to promote and boost a business culture that fosters equality and the integration of women into positions of responsibility.
