  • The ‘Second Call for Environment and Sustainable Development Project Proposals’, which has received an additional 50,000 euros in funding this year, is aimed at private non-profit environmental organisations operating in the provinces of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia
  • Applicants are invited to submit their proposals until 21 September using an online process
  • The rules for the call for proposals are available on the Bankia En Acción and the Fundación Bancaja

Bankia and the Fundación Bancaja have launched the ‘Second Call for Environment and Sustainable Development Project Proposals’ this September. The project has a budget of 150,000 euros, 50,000 more than the first call, to support environmental projects for sustainable development and nature conservation in the region of Valencia.

The initiative, which accepts applications until 21 September, will support projects for conservation, restoration and sustainable use of land, marine and freshwater ecosystems; reduce and recycle waste, especially plastics; and encourage technological innovation to reduce and prevent environmental damage. An ability to reduce the carbon footprint will be one aspect looked at by the judges.

The grants will be awarded to private non-profit entities whose articles of association provide for protection of nature and the environment in the provinces of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia. Applications can be submitted online on the Bankia En Acción and Fundación Bancaja.

After the covid-19 crisis, we consider it necessary to rethink our future as a society, and we cannot do this without adopting a green perspective.

Projects may receive up to 20,000 euros each. They will be judged by a jury made up of representatives of the Foundation, Bankia and a specialised technical consultancy. The decisions will be announced in November.

Bankia’s corporate regional director in Valencia and Castellón, Jaime Casas, stressed that “at Bankia, we want to contribute to ensuring that the emergence from the current crisis related to COVID-19 is as sustainable as possible in environmental terms, and we want to support associations that are working towards this goal”. “We consider it necessary to rethink our future as a society, and we cannot do this without adopting a green perspective”, he added.

The chairman of the Fundación Bancaja, Rafael Alcón, highlighted “the importance of the work of environmental associations that, arising from the concern and solidarity commitment of individuals, not only act in the sustainable transformation of our natural environment, but they are also an essential way of raising awareness in order to socially progress always from a stance of environmental respect and balance.” “We encourage the important network of entities that work in the Valencian Community with environmental projects to participate in this call, which wants to be an aid in the implementation and maintenance of their initiatives”, he said.

The 'Call for Environment and Sustainable Development Project Proposals' of Bankia and the Fundación Bancaja was launched last year with a first edition that allowed to support 11 environmental projects in the Comunidad Valenciana with an allocation of 100,000 euros. Of the total projects, five are implemented in Valencia, one in Castellón, one in Alicante and four in the rest of the Comunidad Valenciana.

This call is part of an annual programme between Bankia and Fundación Bancaja, which has been increased to 800,000 euros this year. As well as the call for environmental projects, this year they have launched the 18th Call for Proposals for NGO Cooperation”, aimed at projects carried out in the field of social exclusion and international cooperation; and the “CAPACES Call for Proposals”, aimed at improving the social and occupational prospects of people with disabilities.

Bankia consolidates and reinforces its commitment to society through five priority lines of social action: employment and training, housing, local and rural development, disability and the environment. The bank is focusing its social investment on these areas and shows its commitment to society by involving the entire organisation and its employees. The Responsible Management policy is a capillary, grassroots programme that connects the bank’s welfare work with its corporate objectives. This enables Bankia to prioritise five of the 17 SDGs: Climate action (SDG 13), Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), Quality education (SDG 4), Sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and SDG 17, which encompasses them all, Revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development.

Fundación Bancaja

Social Action and Culture are strategic areas for Fundación Bancaja. As part of its Social Action activities, it holds calls for grant applications from non-profit associations in the Comunidad Valenciana for projects that deal with social exclusion, international cooperation, disability and the environment. It also organises social activities that give specific groups like schoolchildren, senior citizens, people with disabilities and people at risk of social exclusion access to culture.
