  • The commitment was signed by the bank’s CEO, José Sevilla

Bankia, an organisation committed to sustainability and the environment, has signed the "Declaration for a recovery toward a more sustainable and robust economy", an initiative inspired by the principles of the European Green Deal, championed in Spain by the Spanish Green Growth Group (Grupo Español de Crecimiento Verde) and the Community for Climate.

Bankia's CEO, José Sevilla, signed the document on behalf of the bank.

Within the framework of the GECV, a coalition of 50 companies, Bankia has committed to working together to tackle environmental challenges with the conviction that solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate change, decarbonise the economy and drive a circular economy will benefit the entire business sector.

The Spanish Green Growth Group believes that speeding up investment in the Integrated Energy and Climate Plan and the approval of the Climate Change Law are crucial for laying the foundations for a solid recovery, aligned with the climate goals and the sustainable development agenda.

Principles for Responsible Banking

Bankia works to transform climate and environmental challenges into opportunities for a fair and inclusive transition for all. That is why the bank has undergone a series of internal accessions and transformations, in recent years to fulfil the requirements and objectives set by the European Commission.

Additionally, under the leadership of Goirigolzarri, Bankia is one of 130 banks to have committed to the Principles for Responsible Banking promoted by the United Nations and one of the 31 banks in the world that have signed the UN Collective Commitment to Climate Action. Goirigolzarri has also answered the call to action for a 'New Deal for Europe', in terms of sustainability, which has already been signed by 250 CEOs all over Europe.

As part of this commitment, Bankia created the Sustainable Business and Financing Division last August, to streamline mobilisation of resources to promote activities to benefit the environment, society and governance (ESG) criteria, and to promote investment financing under these same criteria.

Nationally, the entity is part of the Forética Climate Change Cluster, the Spanish Green Growth Group, the Spanish Climate Action Platform and the Spanish Observatory for Sustainable Financing.

Internationally, it participates in Earth Hour (WWF) and RE100, created by CDP and The Climate Group, which brings together the most influential companies in the world committed to the use of renewable energy.

The entity also has the recognition of analysts and investors who value the environmental, social and good governance management carried out by the entity. Thus, Bankia is part of the Euronext Vigeo Eurozone 120 index; the FTSE4Good; from the S&P Dow Jones Indices and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe.
