Bankia signed the start of renovation and restoration works of Alquería Julià with the aim of converting the 17th-century building located in the Nou Moles district of Valencia into the 'Casa de la Música', the future headquarters of the Federation of Musical Associations of the Community of Valencia (FSMCV).

The Alquería Julià works are scheduled to start in the coming days and end at the end of the year after a 3.2 million euros investment from Bankia.

The Alquería Julià, a 17th-century building located in the Valencian Nou Moles district, will be equipped with the necessary features to become an important musical centre of the city, where a lot of social and cultural activities will take place.

The building will be the headquarters of the Federation of Musical Associations of the Community of Valencia (FSMCV) and will include a large auditorium, a library, a video library, a music library, sheet music room, various areas for cultural use and an exhibition space.

The construction company Grupo Cyrespa, based in Castellón, will be responsible for the construction work. It is a company dedicated to the renovation, conservation and restoration of artistic heritage, domestically and abroad, which, among other works, has participated in the restoration of the cathedrals of Valencia, Barcelona and Málaga.

The rehabilitation of the Alquería Julià is part of the Bankia Escolta València initiative, launched in 2014 and which also includes, among other initiatives, a call for scholarships for music students, the Bankia Orchestra Contest of the Community of Valencia, the Bankia Awards for Musical Talent and the Música a la Llum fundraising project.

Alquería Julià, property of Bankia, was declared a National Artistic Monument in 1978 and an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2007, which is the highest level of protection for a building in the city of Valencia.

Almost 2,000 square meters

La Alquería consists of a 1,986 sqm plot, with a 692 sqm building in two floors and a tower with an additional 51 sqm. The rest of the plot is occupied by a patio with a garden that will also be restored.

The building is one of the few preserved Valencian farmhouses from the 17th century. In addition to its historical interest, the Alquería still maintains aesthetic elements of great value that are going to be restored, such as domes, paintings, frescoes, paving or tiles.

The restoration project tries to highlight all the elements of great historical and artistic value that are still preserved in the building. It will also carry out the necessary refurbishment to equip it with the features it needs to adapt it to the planned social and cultural activity. Of particular note is the construction of a large auditorium with a large capacity, which will be built underneath the Jardin de la Alquería with the aim of respecting the original structure of the building.

Headquarters of the FSMCV

Once the project is completed, Bankia will grant use of the building to the Federation of Music Associations of the Community of Valencia (FSMCV) to be its administrative headquarters.

Moreover, the FSMCV, with over 500 music associations, will be able to carry out the rest of its cultural activity in the building, such as the Study Centre activities, training and research work and the installation of the Federation’s archive.

The Alquería Julià will add a highly valuable building to the tourist and culture offer of Valencia, which will benefit the Nou Moles district and the city as a whole.

The restoration and the proposed uses for the Alquería are going to entail an economic and cultural revitalization of the district, since the expected level of activity will increase the service needs of all visitors.

The building, once restored, will also become a perfect space for corporate presentations, concerts or any other cultural activities scheduled in the future.

The plan to turn the Alquería Julià into the 'Casa de la Música' is in line with the strategic line of the bank of support for the Valencian music associations, which started in 2014, through the 'Bankia Escolta Valencia' program.

Technical description of the restoration project

The building will house a program related to the Federation of Musical Associations of the Community of Valencia (FSMCV) on the ground floor and the basement, as well as a museum on the first floor, for educational and cultural uses, and the corresponding highlight of an architectural element (building and outdoor gardens) of singular importance.

  •  Ground floor. Administrative area and headquarters of the FSMCV. There will also be rooms for library and a score room with an archive, music library and video library, its corresponding archive and a multipurpose 40 sqm room.
  •  The entrance, in the central area that crosses the entire floor and ends at the garden, is the reception and exhibition space for the "interpretation of the Alquería", intended for visits by the general public.
  •  First floor. It will house the most important paintings and vaults of the building, planned as an exhibition and museum space so visitors can understand its architecture, and which will be open to the public. It will be equipped with a meeting room and a multipurpose area, designed for the cultural activities typical of the Alquería. On this floor there is also a spiral staircase that leads to the tower.
  •  Tower. It is one of the most iconic elements of the Alquería. It can be accessed through the spiral staircase. Given the uniqueness of this architectural element, it will remain an occasional visiting space for small groups, to contemplate the surroundings and, in particular, the garden space.
  •  Auditorium. Newly built. In order to respect the original structure of the Alquería, it will be built below the garden. It is accessed from the ground floor and from the garden itself. Both accesses lead to an Italian garden. The auditorium and rehearsal room have an area of 200 sqm and have the necessary acoustic conditions.
  •  The Garden. It is designed according an ideal recreation of its historical components, as well as to facilitate the operation of its basic functional parts.
