"I want to reaffirm Bankia's support for the people, institutions and businesses of the region of Murcia", he said.

"We want to be very close to the region and to be seen as a very approachable entity", Goirigolzarri stressed.  "As much as was Caja Murcia, now an essential part of Bankia", he added.

At Bankia we are beginning a new stage, a stage of growth after to consolidate our position as the fourth largest bank in the country

José Ignacio Goirigolzarri
Chairman of Bankia

The Chairman of Bankia, speaking to 200 business people, stressed the importance of the region of Murcia for the bank: The region "is a very important area for us not just because it is part of our history, the history of the new Bankia, but also given its huge importance from a business point of view".

In this respect, he pointed out that "Bankia has over 500,000 customers in the region", that "over 24,000 companies trust in us", and that "we have a market share of 25.7% in the region, in addition to 150 branches and 880 employees. "All this makes me very proud but also comes with a great sense of responsibility", he said.

In this respect, he stressed that "Bankia can count on an excellent ambassador" in Carlos Egea who is a member of the Board of the bank. "I am sure he will bring a breath of fresh Murcian air to us all", he said.

Mr. Goirigolzarri highlighted that, after the integration of BMN, "at Bankia we are beginning a new stage, a stage of growth" with three drivers: "our positioning with customers", the opportunity to carry out certain previously restricted activities such as real estate development and operations in capital markets, and the merger with BMN itself, which "has enabled us to consolidate our position as the fourth largest bank in the country and dramatically improve our market share in high growth areas".

2018-2020 Strategic Plan

For the new period which is about to begin, "we have created a Strategic Plan for the next three years". "Our aim is to be the best bank in Spain". The Bankia we aspire to in 2020 will be a bank "with earnings of some 1,300 million euros, a double-digit ROE (yield) and an efficiency ratio of close to 45%". Also, "the bank must be capable of generating equity of over 2,500 million euros with which to remunerate our shareholders" in this period.

To achieve these financial goals, Bankia is relying on a ‘Responsible Management' model based on four pillars: excellent corporate governance, committed teams, satisfied customers and the bank's contribution to and commitment with Spanish society.

This is because the sustainability of the project "is not founded solely on results, but on how they are achieved". "We remain determined to ensure that all our employees are aware that no result or goal justifies going against our principles and values" he said, and then went on to admit that "corporate governance has been an obsession" since his arrival at Bankia.

In this respect, he explained that "the first thing" they did was "to totally change the Board of Directors", which comprises 12 members, of which eight are independent and three executive, and which "has been enriched by the incorporation of Carlos Egea".

"The work done over all these years has meant that today Bankia is considered a benchmark entity for corporate governance by proxy agencies" he pointed out, and he went on to say that "it is impossible to build an excellent project that is sustainable over time if this is not based on excellent corporate governance".

Customer satisfaction

Mr. Goirigolzarri admitted that another "priority focus" of Bankia's strategy is customer satisfaction. "Customers give meaning to our project and our business. Without their trust, the sustainability of our project would amount to nothing", he said. "Our strategy is based on listening to the customer" who wants "a bank that is approachable, straight-forward and transparent".

"This is not just a slogan but something that dramatically affects not only our commercial policy, but also our procedures and, even, our organisation", the Chairman admitted. "Two and a half years on, we can categorically say that our new positioning has resulted in clear differentiation, increasing levels of customer satisfaction and very significant growth in our customer base" he said. The number of retail customers increased by 151,415 in 2017.

Mr. Goirigolzarri pointed out that with its principles and excellent corporate governance being the "foundations" of Bankia and customer satisfaction "our point of reference", "achieving sustainable results is impossible without a committed team".

"The main reason for this transformation has been the change in mentality of the Bankia team", he said. "It is crucial that the team remains committed to a professional project that rewards people on merit and in which each Bankia employee continues to be aware that their daily contribution is decisive for the bank's future". "All of us who work in the bank are owners of the project because together we make it a reality", he added.

Mr. Goirigolzarri underlined that responsible digitalisation is also part of the responsible management model "in which privacy and careful management of customers' data are our top priority". "This model interlinks the ‘whats' - the results - with the ‘hows' -how things are done", he went on.

In this respect, the Chairman of Bankia mentioned the bank's commitment "to continue working to the best of our ability towards solving what we believe to be the most important problems in our society". He also underlined "the effort dedicated to employment and education through the Dual Training Foundation set up in 2016 with professional training being its main priority".

He also stressed that Bankia's model "is aimed at generating value for our shareholders on a sustainable basis, which in our case, is also the best way of repaying the aid we received from Spanish taxpayers". "I can assure you that we have the motivation, commitment and drive to succeed", he concluded.
