The US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) came into effect on 1 July 2014. It is designed to make US residents or citizens (US persons) comply with their tax obligations. It requires international financial institutions to firstly identify customers of US nationality or those that are tax residents in the USA (US persons), and secondly to provide certain information about these customers to the IRS or the appropriate tax authority.

On 14 May 2013, Spain and the USA signed an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) to implement the FATCA in Spain. This has subsequently been implemented through Order HAP/1136/2014 of 30 June 2014, the amendment of the General Regulations on Tax Inspection and Management Procedures and the amendment of the General Tax Act.

The institutions of the Bankia group have been registered with the IRS and have been included in the official list of participating financial institutions published by the IRS since 2 June 2014.(You may consult this list by going to the IRS website).
